Deciding how much capital to invest in each new TCG set is one of the hardest decisions that comes with running a game store. We want to make that decision easier, so we’ve compiled a report of the bestselling Magic: The Gathering sets this month. This report will show you which Magic sets are still in high demand months or years after their release, so you can better anticipate what the demand will be for upcoming sets.
The report lists the top 100 Magic: The Gathering sets, ranked by the total GMV of all sales (sealed and singles) on the TCGplayer Marketplace between October 16 and November 14, 2024. As a quick preview, here are the ten sets at the very top of the list:
Top 10 Bestselling Magic: The Gathering Sets
#10 Revised Edition
Released: April 11, 1994.
Revised Edition was the third version of the original Magic: The Gathering core set (the earlier versions being Alpha and Beta), and the most widely printed of the three. That makes this 30-year-old set the most affordable option for players who want to pick up dual lands like Underground Sea, or other Reserved List Commander bombs like Wheel of Fortune.
#9 Modern Horizons 2
Released: June 18, 2021.
Months after Modern Horizons 3 completely rewrote the format, Modern Horizons 2 still ranks as one of the bestselling Magic: The Gathering sets right now. Part of that is due to the set’s strongest cards like Urza’s Saga, Esper Sentinel, and Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer (none of which have been widely reprinted), but MH2 also boasts the most affordable reprints of fetch lands like Misty Rainforest currently available.
#8 Commander: The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth
Released: June 20, 2023.
The Commander subset of Tales of Middle-earth has almost as much staying power as the main set thanks to its flavorful reskins of Commander staples like Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and Ancient Tomb.
#7 Bloomburrow
Released: August 2, 2024.
Bloomburrow didn’t just enchant new and returning players with its theme, it also gave everyone a pile of new Commander staples that are still selling well today like Tree Tree City and Patchwork Banner (a $5 uncommon!), and even multi-format all-stars like Innkeeper’s Talent.
#6 Commander Masters
Released: August 4, 2023.
Commander Masters has ranked well once again thanks to the enduring popularity of the Commander format. The set contains reprints of over 400 format staples, and most of those reprints are now the cheapest printings of their respective cards. If Wizards of the Coast ever reprints those cards again, we can expect the current interest in Commander Masters to transfer to the new set.
#5 Universes Beyond: The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth
Released: June 23, 2023.
Last year’s biggest set continues to rank highly. The One Ring and Orcish Bowmasters remain a big part of the set’s success, as they’re still all over Modern, and nobody is certain whether Wizards of the Coast eventually plans to ban them or reprint them.
#4 Modern Horizons 3
Released: June 14, 2024.
As expected, Modern Horizons 3 completely redefined the format when it released in June. Nadu’s ban just opened up room for the rest of the set’s cards to spawn more archetypes like Energy and Mono-Blue Charbelcher that have swept the old guard away and required anyone who wants to play Modern to buy into MH3.
#3 Duskmourn: House of Horror
Released: September 27, 2024.
Like Bloomburrow before it, Duskmourn delivered vibes and must-plays in equal measure. The bestselling cards from the set right now include Abhorrent Oculus, which has broken into Modern, Overlord of the Hauntwoods, which is doing work in Pioneer and Standard, and Unholy Annex // Ritual Chamber, which you can read about in our list of Magic cards that are rising in price.
#2 Secret Lair Drop Series
Released: December 2, 2019 - Present.
The list of Secret Lair cards grows longer with each passing year, so we can expect at least some of them to sell well every month.
In November, the top-selling Secret Lair card was the Dr. Strange-inspired Counterspell, which massively outsold even the other blockbuster cards from the much-maligned Avengers Secret Lair.
#1 Foundations
Released: November 15, 2024.
Preorders for Foundations pushed the upcoming super-core-set ahead of every other set, showing there’s tons of excitement for the first Magic set in years designed specifically to onboard new players. In a year full of landmark Magic releases, Foundations could end up being the biggest (and highest-grossing).
