Making Wilds Unknown: Exclusive Game Designer Interview
By Kayla Zinn •
TCGplayer met with Levi Dodd, a Senior Game Designer at Ravensburger, to get a behind the scenes look at how they created the newest Disney Lorcana set, Wilds Unknown. To learn more about Wilds Unknown check out Explore Wilds Unknown With Disney Lorcana.
Here’s a snapshot of the interview:
What was your role and your responsibilities in developing Wilds Unknown?
I am the Lead Game Designer on Wilds Unknown. I worked with some of the other designers to come up with what our mechanical themes for the set were and what the various glimmers would be doing in gameplay. We decided which characters would go into which ink types and what kinds of decks they would create. After that it was my responsibility to maintain our vision during the set’s playtesting by making sure everything stayed connected to the work of the narrative and art teams, as well as had enough inspiration from the Disney characters reflected throughout each of their glimmer executions.
Is there one particular detail about Wilds Unknown that you’d love for the wider community to know?
It’s really hard to pick just one. We have a fun gameplay pattern inspired by Mr. Incredible taking on the Omnidroid from Disney and Pixar’s The Incredibles, where each can defeat each other in the right circumstances within the game. If the glimmer of Mr. Incredible is alone, he won’t be able to defeat the ultimate Omnidroid glimmer. He’ll need his family’s help to get the job done.
Or perhaps a fun piece of trivia would be that we had an actual musician do the art for a certain Alan-a-Dale card in the set. Look out for that one while you are opening packs of the set!
Is there a fan-favorite strategy that you think may get a boost from Wilds Unknown? What are your favorite strategies from previous sets?
I think the Amber Emerald “Dogs” deck will probably look at some of the new Toys, and some may find their way into a new hybrid version of that deck. I think that would be fun because it would remind me of the opening of Toy Story 2 where Woody works together with Buster.
I also hope to see a boost to Emerald-based decks outside of Amber as well. I think some of the new emerald cards like Lyle Tyberius Roarke - Adventurer for Hire and Milo Thatch – Getting His Hands Dirty will give some interesting new possibilities for that ink type, and I’ll be excited to see what players come up with.
