Uncommonly Profitable: Valuable Commons and Uncommons from Torment
By Drew Knapp •
While not every set in Magic: The Gathering is renowned for its value, there are a number of sets that still manage to stand out. Notably, many people make the mistake of only looking at higher rarities when considering how profitable any given set is to break open, but that’s flat wrong. I’ve made it my mission to highlight sets that have value hiding in the front of the pack, and today we’re going to take a look at a personal favorite: Torment.
As sets age, the best cards in them inevitably end up gaining value. This is especially true of the first printings of particularly powerful game pieces, with lands in particular jumping out as regular “bling” pieces in decks. The best example, and one that also happens to be an uncommon, is Cabal Coffers, originally from our chosen set.
While the coffers are unquestionably the most valuable lower rarity card in Torment, it is far from the only one that can be worth a notable amount of value, with a stack of 10 common and uncommon cards easily going for $1 or more! From well known combo pieces to even more favorite lands, Torment is an older set that you can consider cracking open for value:
- Cabal Coffers
- Cabal Ritual
- Cephalid Illusionist
- Acorn Harvest
- Tainted Peak
- Tainted Wood
- Chainer’s Edict
- Tainted Isle
- Arrogant Wurm
- Cleansing Meditation
While only currently featuring ten cards, there are a number of other game pieces like Circular Logic hover around our $1 benchmark. As a whole, Torment has plenty of cards to keep an eye out for, as its most powerful cards still see play across multiple formats (including Pauper and Commander!). With minimal effort, you can fill your own coffers with the help of Torment.
Anyone can sell these cards on TCGplayer. All you need to do is list your inventory! For your convenience, we’ve also included a downloadable CSV of the valuable commons and uncommons we’ve covered so far.
