Price Trends: Magic: The Gathering Cards Climbing in Price - 10/08/24
By Peter Day •
We want you to have the best information available when you price cards on the TCGplayer Marketplace. So to help you get the most from your inventory, we’ve put together a downloadable CSV report of Magic: The Gathering cards that have dramatically increased in Market Price in the past 30 days.
(Note: This report only considers Near Mint copies of cards with at least five sales between September 7 and October 6, 2024.)
Here are ten highlights from that report. First, we have the five cards that gained the most value in the past 30 days after starting with a Market Price of $5 or less.
Top 5 Price Increases—MTG Cards $5 or Less
- Set: Magic Origins
- Increase: +$15.02
- Current Market Price: $17.04
September saw the release of Duskmourn: House of Horror, a new Premier Magic set based on VHS-era horror movies. The house and the horrors within it are represented mechanically with Enchantments, so the set features plenty of Enchantment synergies and Enchantment-based commanders, all of which work well with Starfield of Nyx.
In particular, Aminatou, Veil Piercer surveils every turn, putting Enchantments into the graveyard where Starfield of Nyx can reanimate them, and Marina Vendrell unlocks rooms for free, turning low-mana-value spells into big-mana-value permanents that Starfield animates into huge creatures.
- Set: Commander Masters
- Increase: +$15.85
- Current Market Price: $17.68
Only a few cents separate the last version of Starfield of Nyx from this one, which spiked for the exact same reasons.
#3 Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin (Showcase)
- Set: March of the Machine: The Aftermath
- Increase: +$15.95
- Current Market Price: $19.91
Last month, Forsaken Wastes was spiking in anticipation of Valgavoth, Harrower of Souls, the most popular new commander in Duskmourn. Duskmourn finally released this month, and Forsaken Wastes wasn’t the only beneficiary: several overlooked cards with Valgavoth synergies also spiked as players looked to upgrade their Endless Punishment precons. Ob Nixilis triggers off of most of the same pingers that enable Valgavoth, letting players get even more cards and +1/+1 counters.
#2 Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin
- Set: March of the Machine: The Aftermath
- Increase: +$16.48
- Current Market Price: $18.22
This version of Ob Nixilis spiked for the same reason as the Showcase version (Valgavoth, Harrower of Souls), but as the lower-rarity version, it had further to grow.
- Set: Core Set 2020
- Increase: +$16.62
- Current Market Price: $18.30
Chandra is a Valvagoth enabler like Forsaken Wastes. Her +2 gives every opponent an emblem that damages them on their upkeeps (triggering Valgavoth), and since she can’t be countered, there’s very little opponents can do to avoid being stuck with that emblem all game.
Next, these are the five cards that gained the most value in the past 30 days after starting with a Market Price over $5.
Top 5 Price Increases—MTG Cards Over $5
#5 Mana Vault
- Set: Ultimate Masters
- Increase: +$37.39
- Current Market Price: $100.03
Sales of every version of Mana Vault spiked massively on September 23 in the wake of the Commander Rules Committee’s unexpected ban announcement. With Jeweled Lotus and Mana Crypt both falling to the hammer, Mana Vault succeeded them as the best turn-one fast-mana option for competitive and high-power casual Commander players. Given the fallout from that announcement, (and Mana Vault’s built-in drawbacks), it’s very unlikely that Mana Vault will meet the same fate as Lotus and Crypt any time soon.
#4 Mana Vault
- Set: Revised Edition
- Increase: +$40.00
- Current Market Price: $90.12
As I mentioned, every version of Mana Vault spiked.
- Set: Double Masters 2022
- Increase: +$56.69
- Current Market Price: $131.14
Yup, this one too. It gained the most total value of all the Mana Vaults, probably on account of being so gosh darn purdy.
#2 Mox Diamond
- Set: Stronghold
- Increase: +$71.12
- Current Market Price: $608.00
Mox Diamond is part of The Reserved List, which means it’s expensive enough for any sale to shift its price by a massive amount in absolute terms, and it’s attractive enough to speculators to get a lot of sales. Mox Diamond in particular has been trending upward all year, though it’s still below its all-time high of $669.
- Set: Revised Edition
- Increase: +$75.09
- Current Market Price: $770.41
Underground Sea is back for another month, this time in the #1 spot. Like Mox Diamond, this Reserved List card has been creeping up in price in 2024, though it’s even further from its all-time high of $978.
