Top Selling Magic: The Gathering Cards on TCGplayer: September 2024
Peter DayThe first step to serving customer demand is to understand it. So to help you follow what’s currently popular with players and collectors, we’ve put together a pair of downloadable CSV reports of the top-selling Magic: The Gathering cards of the past month.
These reports show the name and set of the Magic cards with the highest total number of copies sold on the TCGplayer Marketplace between September 1 and September 26. The reports consider cards from different sets to be distinct (even if they have the same name), but do not distinguish copies sold by condition (Near Mint, Lightly Played, etc.) or by printing (Foil, etc.).
The two reports cover cards that had an average sale price in September within two ranges: $50.00 or more, and $1.00 to $49.99.
Here are five highlights from each report.
Top Selling Magic Cards: $50 or More
#1 Jeweled Lotus
Set: Commander Legends
Average Sale Price: $55.40
In a surprising move with no warning, on September 23 the Commander Rules Committee (RC) banned Jeweled Lotus and two of the other strongest fast mana cards in the format. (They also banned Nadu, Winged Wisdom, but given that card’s youth and its recent banning in Modern, it wasn’t nearly as shocking.) Jeweled Lotus only works with commanders, so while it’s still legal in Legacy and Vintage, the RC’s decision rendered the formerly $90 card basically unplayable in official and semi-official settings. Predictably, sellers cut prices to try to sell off their now-worthless cards.
But the biggest twist in the story (financially speaking, anyway) is that players reacted by buying into Jeweled Lotus at the reduced prices. They bought so many copies that its price halted mid-freefall and bounced back to over $50. There’s no way to tell what these buyers are thinking—maybe they expect their local playgroups will happily ignore the RC’s controversial decision, or that the RC will reconsider under community pressure, or that the cEDH community will develop a separate banlist where Jeweled Lotus is still legal. Whatever the reason, players bought a ton of lotuses in the past week.
#2 The One Ring (Borderless) (LTR Bundle)
Set: Unique and Miscellaneous Promos
Average Sale Price: $82.17
Just like in July and August, this version of The One Ring continues to be the most affordable version of Sauron’s malice made manifest, and so it’s also one of the fastest-selling Magic cards over $50. Its price has un-rebounded from the bump it got when it didn’t get banned in the same announcement that cooked Nadu in Modern. That could be related to Wizards of the Coast’s assurance that they’re keeping a lidless eye on the One Ring, or it might have to do with MTG Head Designer Mark Rosewater’s confirmation that WotC can reprint The One Ring and other cards from Tales of Middle-earth if necessary.
#3 Orcish Bowmasters (Borderless)
Set: Universes Beyond: The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth
Average Sale Price: $53.85
Orcish Bowmasters is the other Tales of Middle-earth card that has had an outsized impact on competitive formats, as it snipes down 1-toughness creatures with ease turn after turn. Only the Borderless version ranks here, because the regular version is still under $50, though it could break that threshold any day now.
#4 The One Ring
Set: Universes Beyond: The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth
Average Sale Price: $104.71
The normal version of The One Ring continues to sell for the same reasons as the Borderless version: it’s one of the best cards in all of Modern and Commander. Until WotC reprints it or bans it in Modern, it’ll remain a hugely desirable card.
#5 Mana Crypt
Set: The List Reprints
Average Sale Price: $123.56
Mana Crypt was another piece of fast mana that the Commander Rules Committee banned on September 23. Like Jeweled Lotus, it lost nearly half its value over the following days, but a surge in sales stopped it from plummeting further. Unlike Jeweled Lotus, it’s still playable in an official Magic format (Vintage, where it’s Restricted).
Top Selling Magic Cards: $1.00 to $49.99
#1 Patchwork Banner
Set: Bloomburrow
Average Sale Price: $3.76
Patchwork Banner is back for another month as the top-selling Magic card over $1. It combines color fixing, mana ramp, and a typal anthem effect into one card that every Commander player wants whether they’re building around Zombies or Dragons or Zombie Dragons.
#2 Slime Against Humanity
Set: Murders at Karlov Manor
Average Sale Price: $1.74
Cards like Slime Against Humanity that break the normal rules for how many copies you can play in a deck always have the potential to break into the top sellers. All it takes is a small bump in the number of players who’re interested in building with them. Those players will buy dozens of copies each, instead of the 1-4 copies each you’d normally see for any other card.
#3 Heartfire Hero
Set: Bloomburrow
Average Sale Price: $2.95
This rampaging rodent has burrowed its way into Standard and Pioneer and now fights happily alongside other one-drops like Monastery Switspear and Kumano Faces Kakkazan. It gains so much from being buffed that it’s turned Monsterous Rage into a $2 uncommon.
#4 Consign to Memory
Set: Modern Horizons 3
Average Sale Price: $7.06
Speaking of expensive uncommons, Consign to Memory has become the top selling card from Modern Horizons 3, ahead of cards like Ulamog, the Defiler and Psychic Frog, and one of the most-played cards in all of Modern. Practically every blue deck runs Consign in its sideboard to answer The One Ring, along with any annoying triggered abilities on cards like Obsidian Charmaw or Amped Raptor.
#5 Into the Flood Maw
Set: Bloomburrow
Average Sale Price: $1.16
Into the Flood Maw acts like a half-price Disperse as long as you gift a 1/1 Fish token to an opponent—the kind of “cost” that tends to be all upside in a politics-heavy multiplayer format like Commander.
Selling cards that have high “velocity” keeps your cash flow healthy so you can take advantage of new opportunities. Check out our reports on the top-selling cards in Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokémon, and be sure to list these cards on TCGplayer to unlock value you can reinvest in your business.
