Price Trends: Magic: The Gathering Cards Climbing in Price - 12/10/2024

We want you to have the best information available when you price cards on the TCGplayer Marketplace. So to help you get the most from your inventory, we’ve put together a downloadable CSV report of Magic: The Gathering cards that have dramatically increased in Market Price in the past 30 days.

(Note: This report only considers Near Mint copies of cards with at least five sales between November 9 and December 8, 2024.)

Here are ten highlights from that report. First, we have the five cards that gained the most value in the past 30 days after starting with a Market Price of $5 or less.

Top 5 Price Increases—MTG Cards $5 or Less

#5 Restless Cottage

  • Set: Wilds of Eldraine
  • Increase: +$5.42
  • Current Market Price: $8.11

Recent changes to Standard—including the switch to a three-year lifecycle, the rotation in August, and Standard being one of the formats for the currenty RCQ season—have made the format once again relevant to the MTG market. Case in point: Restless Cottage. This tapland cost less than a dollar before rotation, but with less competition in its colors, it quickly became a key card in Golgari Midrange decks and its price rose in response. Cyber Weekend hit just as Restless Cottage was riding another wave of interest after Golgari Midrange made Top 8 in the Standard Showcase Challenge on November 23rd.

#4 Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain (Retro Frame)

  • Set: Commander: The Brothers' War
  • Increase: +$5.49
  • Current Market Price: $8.55

The Retro Frame version of Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain has seen a few big buyouts this year, but they mostly came in the first half of 2024 and didn’t budge her price that much. Instead, Jhoira took flight this month due to the arrival of Captain America, First Avenger.

Fans who were lucky enough to order Cap (or bought him after the controversial Superdrop ended) have been picking up Jeskai-colored Equipment and Artifact cards like Bureau Headmaster, Fighter Class, and Enthusiastic Mechanaut to pair with the super soldier. Cards like Retro Jhoira that were already scarce before November became even more rare (and valuable) after the one-two punch of heightened interest and Cyber Weekend shopping.

#3 Hexplate Wallbreaker

  • Set: Commander: Phyrexia: All Will Be One
  • Increase: +$6.08
  • Current Market Price: $8.18

Hexplate Wallbreaker is another Equipment card that got more expensive with the release of Captain America. Speculators bought a massive number of copies of Hexplate Wallbreaker on November 5th (the day after the release of the Marvel Secret Lair Superdrop), with the number of copies per buyer jumping to 12.3. It’s hard to say whether the ensuing price spike would have happened anyway, but in any case, the the price of Hexplate Wallbreaker soared in the following weeks.

#2 The Golden Throne

  • Set: Universes Beyond: Warhammer 40,000
  • Increase: +$8.10
  • Current Market Price: $11.77

On November 19th, there was a small buyout that pushed the number of copies per buyer up to 14.3. It wasn’t any larger than an earlier buyout on July 16 (which didn’t make an impact on The Golden Throne’s price), but the November buyout managed to clear out the remaining Near Mint copies under $10 and push the card into double digits.

The Golden Throne doesn’t see a ton of play, but it’s an iconic piece of lore from the Warhammer 40K universe, and that alone ensures any 40K fans who cross over to Magic in the future are going to want to pick it up.

#1 Stormchaser's Talent

  • Set: Bloomburrow
  • Increase: +$9.31
  • Current Market Price: $11.58

Stormchaser’s Talent started climbing soon after it featured in one of the Top 4 decks of the MTG Standard Showcase Challenge on November 23, one of only two Rare spells in the budget-friendly list. The timing meant it was primed to soar amid the Cyber Weekend shopping.

Next, these are the five cards that gained the most value in the past 30 days after starting with a Market Price over $5.

Top 5 Price Increases—MTG Cards Over $5

#5 Plateau

  • Set: Revised Edition
  • Increase: +$33.07
  • Current Market Price: $357.17

Our Cyber Weekend promotion also gave high-end collectors an excuse to splurge on Reserved List cards they’d been eyeing all year, like Plateau and other dual lands. This price spike represents just a fraction of Plateau’s value and doesn’t mean much more than “purchases were made.”

#4 Sol Ring - Dwarven (0409)

  • Set: Commander: The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth
  • Increase: +$41.66
  • Current Market Price: $305.03

The Dwarven version of Sol Ring is back for another month of price-climbing. All three of the Middle-earth Sol Rings are up year-over-year, thanks to the Tolkien licensing agreement coming to its conclusion and the release of the second season of The Rings of Power. But the Dwarven version has had the smoothest journey of the three, creeping up week after week until finally breaking $300 this month, up from $160 at the start of 2024.

#3 Wheel of Fortune

  • Set: Revised Edition
  • Increase: +$43.34
  • Current Market Price: $318.10

Wheel of Fortune goes with Plateau as another Reserved List card that saw a small, predictable spike as collectors made their biggest purchases of the year to earn store credit on Cyber Weekend.

#2 Tropical Island

  • Set: 30th Anniversary Edition
  • Increase: +$43.87
  • Current Market Price: $227.11

Tropical Island fits the same pattern as the other Reserved Cards, with the extra wrinkle that this version comes from 30th Anniversary Edition: the controversial Alpha/Beta reprint set from 2022. The set’s astronomical price of $250 per pack and the fact that none of the cards were tournament-legal (to avoid violating the letter of the Reserved List) made 30th Anniversary Edition exceedingly unpopular, and singles have been slow to move. This particular spike was prompted by just one sale.

#1 City of Traitors

  • Set: Exodus
  • Increase: +$70.76
  • Current Market Price: $417.13

City of Traitors brings us back with another tournament-legal Reserved List card that collectors picked up while they could get 13%+ back in store credit during Cyber Weekend.
