The first step to serving customer demand is to understand it. So to help you follow what’s currently popular with players and collectors, we’ve put together a pair of downloadable CSV reports of the top-selling Pokémon cards of the past month.

These reports show the name and set of the Pokémon cards with the highest total number of copies sold on the TCGplayer Marketplace between August 1 and August 31. The reports consider cards from different sets to be distinct (even if they have the same name), but do not distinguish copies sold by condition (Near Mint, Lightly Played, etc.) or by printing (Foil, etc.).

The two reports cover cards that had an average sale price in August within two ranges: $50.00 or more, and $1.00 to $49.99.

Here are five highlights from each report.

Top Selling Pokémon Cards: $50 or More

#1 Mew ex - 232/091
Set: Paldean Fates
Average Sale Price: $86.21

The Special Illustration Rare version of Mew ex with art by USGMEN is continuing its multi-month streak as one of the bestselling Pokémon cards over $50, only this time it’s climbed to the #1 spot. That’s partly due to a persistent series of small buyouts that have put pressure on the card’s supply. But the normal version of Mew ex from 151 has also seen more sales recently with the rise of the Regidrago VSTAR deck, which usually runs one copy of Mew ex.

#2 Charizard ex - 199/165
Set: Scarlet & Violet—151
Average Sale Price: $117.63

The Pokémon Company did an admirable job printing enough Scarlet & Violet—151 to meet the absurd demand for this nostalgia-set-to-end-all-nostalgia-sets. Even so, 151 is a year old now, and supply is starting to dry up—which is driving up prices and sales of the #1 card from the set, this Special Illustration Rare Charizard card that forms the third part in a story connecting its whole evolution line.

#3 Charizard ex - 234/091
Set: Paldean Fates
Average Sale Price: $112.80

Paldean Fates came out this year and doesn’t have as compelling a premise as 151, so its fancy Charizard card falls just short of 151’s fancy Charizard card in terms of copies sold. But only just. Shiny Tera Charizard has the advantage of being one of the strongest cards in Standard, so it gets the same bump from player demand that helped push Mew ex into the top spot.

#4 Roaring Moon ex - 251/182
Set: Paradox Rift
Average Sale Price: $56.60

Special Illustration Rare Roaring Moon ex came roaring back to the spotlight after a Roaring Moon deck came in second place at the World Championships on August 18. This was already one of the most expensive cards in Paradox Rift, but with players looking for copies to max-rarity their decks, it has managed to defend its position at the top from Illustration Rare Groudon.

#5 Earthen Vessel
Set: Shrouded Fable
Average Sale Price: $53.02

The latest Pokémon set, Shrouded Fable, has mostly bored collectors and failed to produce any cards that can hold their value. The one exception is the Hyper Rare version of Earthen Vessel, which (as we’re about to see) is one of the most-played Trainer cards in Standard right now. Enough players want this gold bowl to turn it into the second-most expensive card in the entire set, and unlike Cassiopeia, it’s still climbing in price.

Top Selling Pokémon Cards: $1.00 to $49.99

#1 Buddy-Buddy Poffin
Set: Temporal Forces
Average Sale Price: $2.01

As usual, the bestselling Pokémon cards in the $1 to $50 range this month are Trainer cards that show up across a wide range of competitive decks.

Buddy-Buddy Poffin sees play in every competitive Pokémon deck that runs Evolution Pokémon, so it’s more or less guaranteed to rank among the top-selling cards.

#2 Earthen Vessel
Set: Paradox Rift
Average Sale Price: $4.04

Just like Buddy-Buddy Poffin, Earthen Vessel is a competitive staple across tons of Pokémon decks that has only been printed once at its base rarity. The upcoming Pokémon set Stellar Crown is going to feature lots of Stellar-type Pokémon cards that require multiple types of Energy to attack, so the ability to search up any type of energy with Earthen Vessel is only going to become more powerful.

#3 Super Rod - 188/193
Set: Paldea Evolved
Average Sale Price: $1.02

Super Rod is (if anything) even more of a staple in Pokémon decks than Buddy-Buddy Poffin and Earthen Vessel, but it ranks lower because it’s been printed so many times before Paldea Evolved. That said, only versions printed since the Scarlet & Violet Series have silver borders instead of the old yellow borders, so players who prefer matching card borders for their decks gravitate toward this printing.

#4 Arven - 166/198
Set: Scarlet & Violet Base Set
Average Sale Price: $1.42

Arven is another two-for-one search card that shows up all over the Pokémon TCG’s Standard format. Along with this version, Arven has been printed as an Uncommon in Obsidian Flames, but the Scarlet & Base Set version has more listings on TCGplayer and is consequently cheaper.

#5 Counter Catcher
Set: Paradox Rift
Average Sale Price: $1.48

Counter Catcher isn’t as ubiquitous as cards like Arven and Earthen Vessel, but it still had a good showing at the 2024 Pokémon World Championships in decks like Charizard and Gardevoir.
