Deciding how much capital to invest in each new TCG set is one of the hardest decisions that comes with running a game store. We want to make that decision easier, so we’ve compiled a report of the bestselling Magic: The Gathering sets this month. This report will show you which Magic sets are still in high demand months or years after their release, so you can better anticipate what the demand will be for upcoming sets.

The report lists the top 100 Magic: The Gathering sets, ranked by the total GMV of all sales (sealed and singles) on the TCGplayer Marketplace between June 22 and July 21, 2024. As a quick preview, here are the ten sets at the very top of the list:

Top 10 Bestselling Magic: The Gathering Sets

#10 Commander: The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth
Released: June 20, 2023.

The Commander subset of Tales of Middle-earth has almost as much staying power as the main set thanks to its flavorful reskins of Commander staples like Minamo, School at Water’s Edge and Ancient Tomb.

#9 Commander: Bloomburrow
Released: August 2, 2024.

Presales for four-deck Bloomburrow Commander Deck Displays have been especially high, with the quantity of Displays sold outpacing the total quantity of individual Commander Decks sold. The cuddly critters of Bloomburrow are helping the set reach players that normally aren’t interested in Magic’s (sometimes gruesome) aesthetics, and those players or their friends may be choosing the precons as their entry point to the game.

#8 Modern Horizons 2
Released: June 18, 2021.

Modern Horizons 3 is definitely the new hotness, but it hasn’t totally eclipsed Modern Horizons 2, which is still the source for some of the most played cards in Modern. This month, the bestselling cards from the now second-most powerful set of all time include Urza’s Saga, the fetch lands, and the Retro Frame versions of Ragavan, Esper Sentinel, and Solitude.

#7 Commander: Modern Horizons 3
Released: June 14, 2024.

The Commander subset of Modern Horizons has dropped precipitously from its #3 spot last month, as precons have finally reached players hands and Commander fans have been distracted by Universes Beyond: Assassin’s Creed. Eldrazi Incursion is still the bestselling precon, though its price is down a little from its presale highs. Talon Gates of Madara has claimed the title of bestselling card from the set, and has risen steadily in price since it released.

#6 Commander Masters
Released: August 4, 2023.

Commander Masters has ranked well once again thanks to the enduring popularity of the Commander format. The set contains reprints of over 400 format staples, and most of those reprints are now the cheapest printings of their respective cards. If Wizards of the Coast ever reprints those cards again, we can expect the current interest in Commander Masters to transfer to the new set.

#5 Universes Beyond: The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth
Released: June 23, 2023.

Last year’s biggest set has ranked even higher this month than it did last month. The One Ring and Orcish Bowmasters remain a big part of the set’s success, as they’re still all over Modern, and nobody is certain when, how, or even if Wizards of the Coast will ever reprint them.

#4 Bloomburrow
Released: August 2, 2024.

The presales for the main Bloomburrow set are elevated thanks to a Treasure Trove deal run on Friday, July 19, but general interest in the set appears to be high regardless. Three Tree City and its variants made up five of the top six preselling cards from Bloomburrow during the period of this report, proving that Magic players still love typal decks.

#3 Secret Lair Drop Series
Released: December 2, 2019 - Present.

The list of Secret Lair cards grows longer with each passing year, so we can expect at least some of them to sell well every month. In July, the top-selling Secret Lair card was the Fallout version of Trinisphere, which is also the least expensive version of the Darksteel card. Every version of Trinisphere has spiked in the past month in response to Storm’s return to Modern.

#2 Universes Beyond: Assassin's Creed
Released: July 5, 2024.

Assassin’s Creed is the latest Universes Beyond set and has managed as well as such a set might be expected to when it’s wedged between Modern Horizons 3 on the one side and Bloomburrow on the other. Booster Displays are far and away the most popular sealed product from the set, and the Borderless version of Ezio Auditore da Firenze is the top single, due to Ezio being the hottest new commander.

#1 Modern Horizons 3
Released: June 14, 2024.

Modern Horizons 3 chalks up another month as the bestselling Magic set, further cementing its title as the best set of the year. Play Booster Displays and Collector Booster Displays are the top MH3 products by GMV, while Phlage, Titan of Fire’s Fury has risen to become the top single from the set thanks to seeing play both in Energy decks and more traditional control decks.
