Top Selling Magic: The Gathering Sets Right Now – 4/30/24
By Peter Day •Deciding how much capital to invest in each new TCG set is one of the hardest decisions that comes with running a game store. We want to make that decision easier, so we’ve compiled a report of the bestselling Magic: The Gathering sets this month. This report will show you which Magic sets are still in high demand months or years after their release, so you can better anticipate what the demand will be for upcoming sets.
The report lists the top 100 Magic: The Gathering sets, ranked by the total GMV of all sales (sealed and singles) on the TCGplayer Marketplace between April 1 and April 22, 2024. As a quick preview, here are the ten sets at the very top of the list:
Top 10 Bestselling Magic: The Gathering Sets
#10 The Lost Caverns of Ixalan
Released: November 17, 2023.
Five months after its release, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan is still selling remarkably well for a normal Standard-legal set, thanks to its high number of powerful cards that shine in Commander. At the top of the list of cards players want are Roaming Throne, Bloodletter of Aclazotaz, and Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation.
#9 Outlaws of Thunder Junction: The Big Score
Released: April 19, 2024.
The Big Score is a 30-card bonus sheet released within Outlaws of Thunder Junction that was originally intended to be a separate mini-set, like March of the Machine: the Aftermath was for March of the Machine. Cards from The Big Score are effectively rarer than Mythics from Outlaws of Thunder Junction, while also being legal in the Standard format, and (in many cases) mechanically unique and extremely powerful. This combination of rarity and power has led to The Big Score outselling Magic sets that are four or more times its size.
#8 Murders at Karlov Manor
Released: February 9, 2024.
Given how recently Murders at Karlov Manor released, we might expect it to be selling better than eighth place. Unfortunately, fans tired of this mystery rather quickly. Just a few cards from the set remain on players’ most-wanted lists, including Vein Ripper, one of the cards Seth Manfield used to win Pro Tour Karlov Manor.
#7 Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate
Released: June 10, 2022.
Battle for Baldur’s Game was considered a disappointing set when it first released, but key singles from the set have continued to sell well, especially Ancient Copper Dragon and Black Market Connections.
#6 Modern Horizons 2
Released: June 18, 2021.
As the set that introduced Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, Urza’s Saga, and the entire cycle of evoke Elementals, Modern Horizons 2 has been the single most important set for Modern players for the last three years. Only Modern Horizons 3, which releases on June 14, has any chance of stealing that title.
#5 Universes Beyond: The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth
Released: June 23, 2023.
The biggest Magic set of 2023 continues to drive sales in 2024. Given that the Borderless Poster version of The One Ring was one of the Magic cards that gained the most value in April, it seems likely that Tales of Middle-earth will remain popular for the foreseeable future.
#4 Commander Masters
Released: August 4, 2023.
Commander Masters’ rank on this list says less about the set itself than it does about the Commander format in general. Commander Masters contains reprints of over 400 format staples, and most of those reprints are now the cheapest printings of their respective cards. If Wizards of the Coast ever reprints those cards again, we can expect the current interest in Commander Masters to transfer to the new set.
#3 Universes Beyond: Fallout
Released: March 8, 2024.
Like clean water in the Wasteland, the initial supply of Universes Beyond: Fallout Collector Boosters has all but dried up, leading to runaway prices and desperation. A huge percentage of Fallout sales in April have been for these packs (which at time of writing have a Market Price of nearly $50 each), as collectors gamble on opening Fallout-themed reprints like Farewell and Sol Ring.
#2 Secret Lair Drop Series
Released: December 2, 2019 - Present.
The list of Secret Lair cards grows longer with each passing year, so we can expect at least some of them to sell well every month. In April, the top-selling Secret lair card was the borderless version of Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord, which spiked in price in February after Seth Manfield’s victory with Rakdos Vampires at Pro Tour Karlov Manor.
#1 Outlaws of Thunder Junction
Released: April 19, 2024.
Unsurprisingly, this month’s newest Magic release was also its bestselling set. Fans’ reception to Outlaws of Thunder Junction has been more positive than to other recent Standard-legal Magic sets, thanks to its great theming, higher-than-average power level, and the chance to open cards from multiple subsets.
